PLASTIC OCEAN

PROJECT OVERVIEW

This project included 4 ‘up-cycled’ life sized (1:1 scale) aquatic endangered sea animals.  Sculptures include one sperm whale named Big Baby, two vaquita porpoises named Donny and Marie and one green sea turtle named Pistachio. These life sized sculptures made their debut at the ‘An Earthly Affair’ show at the South Florida Fair’s 2021 Fair, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.

These works of art are made of single use plastic waste and fishing nets over a welded armature. We also created the accompanying signage/graphics, wooden platform boxes and animal steel bases. By using up-cycled plastic our aim is to educate Guests about the dangers of plastic pollution in the ocean and waterways. The ocean’s deadliest predator is trash.

MEET THE GANG

Meet BIG BABY. BIG BABY is a life size baby sperm whale and is part of an art installation at the South Florida Fair called “An Earthly Affair.” The exhibit is meant to call attention to all the plastic waste that is polluting our waterways. Sperm whales have been dying at an alarming rate due to plastics filling their bellies.

Say hello to PISTACHIO. Pistachio is life size and part of an art installation at the South Florida Fair called “An Earthly Affair.” The exhibit is meant to call attention to all the plastic waste that is polluting our waterways. Green turtles often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish. The ingestion of plastic can cause undernourishment and even death.
We call these beauties DONNY & MARIE. These Vaquita Dolphin upcycled sculptures made their debut at the South Florida Fair in 2021. The exhibit is meant to call attention to all the plastic waste that is polluting our waterways. The Vaquita dolphin is nearly extinct due to illegal fishing. These little guys are made of single use plastic waste and fishing net over a welded armature. We also created signage and bases.
